Does the State I choose for insurance matter if I’m traveling / living nomadically?

Context: I’ve just quit my job and COBRA is expensive. My spouse can get insurance through her employer, but to add me it also costs a lot. My current strategy is to buy on the marketplace/exchange.

I’m mainly looking to prevent bankruptcy with a catastrophic emergency and also insurance to cover an urgent care type situation (unexpected sickness or non-life-threatening injury that needs treatment). FYI I’m 30+ and cannot buy catastrophic plans, so I’m going for Bronze level plans.

I currently live in New York with my spouse, but I’ve quit my job and plan to be nomadic both in the US and doing international travel. However it’s likely I’d spend 30% of my time in NY over the next 6-12 months.

I have immediate family in California and could easily obtain residency there. The Bronze level plans in CA are 30-40% cheaper than the equivalent in NY. Given that I’ll be jobless, this is very tempting.

Does the state I choose matter if I’m going to be nomadic? Are there any red flags I should be aware of getting CA insurance while traveling and when I’m spending time with my spouse in NY? Am I allowed to do this?

Thank you in advance for any thoughts!
