Double insurance coverage & birthday rule question – Florida

Hi 👋🏼

I currently have a PPO plan and HSA account from BCBS – TX through my employer and live in Florida.

My husband is getting a new job in a couple weeks and we were looking at getting double coverage for myself as we want to have kids and I’ve had problems getting pregnant, but haven’t gotten to the stage of specialists quite yet (bye $)

My question is regarding the logistics of double coverage. Can you cherry pick which is insurance is your primary depending on the treatment or does it always default to mine first? Is that a moot point cause the secondary should kick in?

Additionally should the plans match? I know FSA and HSA accounts add a layer of complexity here too, or maybe not.

Also, once we have kids we can add them to both insurance policies right? I have also read about the birthday rule a bit, but my husband and I have the same birthday, different years (he’s older) and that confused me with primary vs secondary insurance so I would love any insight you guys might have.

Thanks!

Edit to add:

Me: F, 31, income: $90k base + commission with on target compensation at $150k

Husband: M, 39, new income $155k + bonus

Zip code: 33067
