Dr Lied About Pre Authorization

I recently had a Mirena IUD placed. I called my insurance company and was told that they covered it with a pre auth. I relayed this to my doctor’s office and they said they would take care of it.

When I arrived for the appointment I asked if the pre auth had been received and that the placement would be covered. They confirmed that it had and we were all set.

I had the IUD placed. Now I have a bill from the doctor’s office for the entire amount. I went on my insurance website and learned that this procedure is not even covered! This was pretty unclear on the site which is why I called in the first place.

Do I have any recourse here? I assume the onus was on me to verify, though I did as far as I understood. Do I just have to argue with the office?

BTW, this is a Medicare Supplement Plan through United Healthcare. I also quality for Medicaid Extra Help, witch is partial coverage. Both I and the doctor are in VA. Not sure if any of that is relevant.
