Dumb naive 22 year old here. Suddenly owe $10,000 in medical bills. Can I get some help?

Okay, backstory. I use my father’s insurance for everything. He and I both work for different construction unions. I was given health insurance through my union but I never used it because I was already covered. I got laid off back in May and since then I’ve had countless doctor’s visits and procedures done.

All of my claims are being denied because the EOB says that I have coverage through another carrier. Ok, but here’s where it gets tricky. Apparently the insurance through my union is an EPO plan? Meaning that anything out of network isn’t covered at all. I didn’t know what any of this shit meant until last night.

I rung up a lady from my union and asked her questions and she told me to provide all claims prior to 10/31 (my insurance expired on 11/1 because I’ve been laid off for so long) and anything after that, say I don’t have other coverage. Her tone on the phone basically made me think that I’m fucked because the insurance plan through my union is an EPO. Please bare with me here, I’m extremely ignorant when it comes to health insurance.

Am I gonna get stuck paying all these bills? I’m getting hit with bills from like 8 different doctors and it’s all just so overwhelming. I’m laid off and suddenly I’m like 10k in debt. I’m running out of my savings. I don’t know what to do. Should I just file bankruptcy?
