Experience with opting out of employer health insurance and going with a private policy?

I have always been covered by an employer’s health plan, but my current employer has a nightmare of a plan (IMO). It’s been a headache finding doctors who accept the insurance, and when I seek help from the insurance company, they refer me back to their website. I genuinely feel like just another phone call for their customer service reps to get through, instead of a person with time-sensitive medical needs.

At this point, I wonder if I should abandon my employer’s healthcare coverage in favor of a plan obtained privately. I don’t mind if it costs more, as long as my needs are met. Also, until recently, my husband and I were covered by his employer’s insurance that did actually cover much of our IVF costs. Our current insurance company does not, and it looks like we are about to have to start another round.

Just wondering if anyone has experience ditching employer insurance in favor of a private policy. Were the associated costs astronomic? Were your needs met?

EDIT: I am in California.
