So I was nagged by my doctor to see a nutritionist. He said “ you have great insurance they SHOULD cover it.” The receptionist said the same damn thing so my spider sense went off. I said to myself let me call my insurance cause it just doesn’t feel right.
So I talk to the BCBSIL rep and they say, “oh yes you are covered 8 visits per year”. I told the rep, “can you document that in my notes please?” And she did. So I go ahead an visit the nutritionist. Total waste of time we played with toy food and she told me not to drink sugary drinks. Then guess what? I get a bill for 489 dollars and I started making calls.
Apparently the hospital billed me as a inpatient so that I’d have to pay my $600 deductible instead of charging it as an outpatient service. So they happily charged me $489 since I had not hit my deductible. I called my doctors office, the hospital, the insurance company and scolded each one of them for perpetrating this fraud against people.
I called and asked and was assured it. was covered and still received a bill. I calmly explained that I would not be paying this and that I would have never gone to this crap if there was even the slightest possibility that a 489 dollar bill could have been generated. I told the rep I can’t afford to eat more than 2 cans of plain tuna fish for lunch and these turds want me to pay 498 to see a nutritionist.
I shamed them and the only thing that helped me was the note I had made in the system. After 15 min of verbal jujitsu I got the rep to admit that they had not fully explained my coverage. I told her “you need to fix this.”
She told me to call the hospital to change the billing code so that it would not count against the deductible but instead count as preventive medicine. I told this older woman “you should be ashamed of yourself, we come to you sick and afraid and you put us through the ringer.
I’m not sure if this will get resolved but I needed to vent. I totally understand why people go postal! They will lead you to the slaughter if you let them. I plan on calling the doctors office, the hospital, and the insurance everyday until this is resolved. I’ll do whatever it takes to get the bill erased. I’ll keep you posted in anyone cares.
