Family Member with no insurance diagnosed with cancer, what steps should they take?

As title says, just found out that a close family member was diagnosed with cancer. I’m wondering what steps they should take to ensure this doesn’t financially ruin them. I know that open enrollment for health insurance is only open for another week so it’s important to enroll in one asap. Are there certain insurances that are better to enroll into? Are there other details to note that can be helpful for someone without insurance in this situation?
