Financial assistance counts towards deductible/out of pocket max?

An ER visit and subsequent hospitalization last year, the bill was quite large but hospital ended up approving my financial assistance application and the bill was paid. Later the same year I went through a scheduled surgery (which thankfully went well) and now I’m looking at another huge bill. Does the financial assistance received count towards my deductible / out of pocket maximum for that year or is there a chance the insurance company will argue I was not the one who actually paid for the deductible/out of pocket max and charge me for these when the second bill comes (same calendar year for both claims). Does financial assistance received generally count towards the deductible or not?
