Hello,
I’m a TX resident with a roomie (23) with a manipulative family and they moved in with us in Nov/Dec 2020. We are trying to get it to where they can get the 2020 stimulus checks that they missed out on last year for being filed as a dependent. This is just so they can get every financial advantage possible since they have a lot of things stacked against them. I’m currently uninsured, but my town has a lot of resources for uninsured people, which is why at this time stimulus > insurance. Roomie can legally be filed as a dependent or independent, from what we’ve gathered.
Parents are wanting to file them as a dependent so they don’t have to pay back the subsidies for having a 3 person household instead of a 4 person household. I learned from an insurance agent that a new bill has passed, starting April 1st, where families below a certain poverty threshold (150-200%) would not have to pay back these subsidies. I do not know their parents exact household income, but their mom mentioned that they are “low income” and they work for a non-profit. Roomie says their parents highest income was ~$40k years ago, which would place them below that threshold anyway.
I was told that only their mom can cancel their marketplace plan, so I’m basically wanting to force this conflict to a close, if possible, without making the parents pay a high subsidy because I would prefer to not leave them with a large bill if they truly are in poverty. Roomie agrees with all of this.
The above is so you can understand the situation. The actual question is:
Is there a way to “force” the termination of your marketplace plan, even if it’s through your parents?
