Gastroenterologist scheduled me for colonoscopy and endoscopy, but because I’m only 28 my insurance is billing it as “diagnostic” meaning I’ll pay $3k + 40% coinsurance which means I’ll end up paying $5-7k.

I basically have had symptoms of GERD, anxiety, etc. Where sometimes it’s hard for me to swallow dry food, and I have to wipe a lot causing some rectal bleeding. Both of these symptoms clear up when I stop drinking coffee and aren’t anxious.

However, I also have health anxiety, so I wanted to get it checked out sooner than later. I went to my PCP who did a stool sample and said I was fine, but to get the swallowing issue checked out from a GI.

The GI asked me my symptoms and a list of questions (“Are you fatigued, urine issues, etc.”) which I answered “no” to. Then said he wants me to get an esophogram, endoscopy, and colonoscopy. Adding to that he wants me to get bloodwork, $81 worth of laxatives AFTER my deductible, a COVID test, etc.

Since I’m only 28 this is considered a diagnostic procedure and not preventative, so insurance is only covering 60% after my deductible, which is already $3,000. Considering colonoscopies are at least $3,000 and adding an endoscopy to it. I can’t help but feel I’ll be paying $5-7k for this.

I’m considering cancelling all my appointments and getting a second opinion because this is way too much for what is most likely reflux/stress.
