Hello, I am currently pregnant with my first child and my husband and I are trying to figure out the best options for health insurance. Right now, we are each covered by individual plans through our employers. However, his insurance is significantly better then mine. Ideally we would like to add me and the baby to his plan and have us all be on the same family plan through his employer. I know that we will have an enrollment period due to qualifying life event when baby is born but I want to make sure that everything should work the way I think it will.
My health insurance has covered me through pregnancy and should cover me through delivery. If we unenroll me from my plan after I deliver and am discharged from the hospital (within the 30 day enrollment after baby’s born) and enroll me and baby in my husbands plan then am I right to assume that my health insurance should still cover the delivery and hospital stay? Also, does my insurance cover the baby until we get him on my husbands or would my husband’s insurance retroactively cover the baby to his birth date?
Are there any major drawbacks to switching me to a different insurance plan shortly after delivery? Or benefits to keeping my plan?
I do know my OB accepts my husbands insurance so he should be okay to take that insurance for postpartum appointments.
Also, in case it is needed, I am in the state of Texas.
