HELP! On Medicaid following layoff since March. Currently still on unemployment. Received a settlement. Do I still qualify for Medicaid, or do I have to pay back all of the healthcare that I’ve received since acquiring the settlement? More questions…..

EDIT: Sorry! My mistake. I totally got the two mixed up. I meant MediCARE, not Medicaid. I can’t edit the title.

Hello! This is a cross-post with r/Medicaid because I need to make sure my post is seen by enough people who might know the answers. Are there other subreddits that I should also post in? Below is my original post:

I am starting to panic because this did not cross my mind until I went to renew last week and saw the qualifying questions. I have been trying to find the answers to my questions on my own, but no avail. What the title says, plus a few more details and questions. I have been on Medicare since the spring when I was laid off due to Covid. I received unemployment benefits until they ran out. I received a large settlement a few months ago and have been living off of that because I have no other choice. This is all the money that I have to my name. I am high risk for Covid. I am living by myself because I cannot count on other people to practice Covid protocol correctly and not get me super sick or kill me.

It was only last week when I went to re-enroll in Medicare for 2021 that I realized that I might no longer qualify for Medicare benefits and that I might have to pay back all of the healthcare and prescriptions that I’ve had since I received the settlement.

Today is the last day for me to renew and I am starting to sweat bullets over this situation, the possibility of having to pay back all of my benefits plus having to purchase my own health insurance for 2021. (I cannot be without health insurance). I need to do the right thing, but I don’t know how to handle this situation. Here are my questions:

  1. Do I still qualify for Medicare?
  2. Do I have to pay back all of the healthcare benefits and prescriptions that I’ve received since the settlement?
  3. If I do, do I need to notify all of the doctors offices and pharmacies, or do I let Medicare handle the paperwork nightmare and just wait until I am billed?
  4. If I still might qualify for Medicare, do I write down the amount of money that I have in my bank account on the renewal form, or do I just include my SSN and let state Medicaid find out how much money I have?
  5. Or, do I my state Medicare office today and them my situation and see what they say?
  6. I cannot be without health care coverage. Since it’s the last day of the year, do I fill out the Medicare forms anyway and also go out and purchase my own health care plan (which I cannot really afford to do) so that I am covered either way, and then if my Medicare is accepted I cancel my other insurance plan?

Can someone please set me straight and guide me as to what is the best treatment of this situation?

Thank you!
