Help with insurance and midwifery care after baby delivery

Hi!

Thank you for taking a minute to read this post.

We delivered our first beautiful baby girl in November of last year. My wife wanted to use a midwife, so we did. Everything was all fine and dandy. We were informed about 3/4ths of the way through that our midwife was out of network. Ok that’s fine the total cost was $6,500 and we agreed that we could swing that…. Here is where things went south.

My wife’s water broke early and we were not able to deliver the baby at the midwife’s birth center. And unfortunately, the midwife made us pay in advance the total cost to deliver the baby ($6,500).

Now, we are also stuck with another $7,000 bill from the hospital for actually delivering the baby.

Should we have to pay for both bills? Should we ask the midwife for a refund, since she didn’t actually deliver the baby? Will I need to eat both payments?

If anyone has been here, I would greatly appreciate some advice.

Thank you!
