High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) a good option to finance my son’s ABA therapy?

Hello everyone — I am the parent of a 3.5 year old boy, recently diagnosed with ASD Level 1 / Asperger’s, and he will soon be starting in-school ABA therapy (which I know is somewhat controversial — I respect all opinions on the subject, but the good or bad of ABA is not what I am asking about).

Our health insurance open enrollment period is here, and I am considering switching from an expensive Cadillac low deductible plan to the other extreme, a High Deductible plan (HDHP) with HSA. I’ve run some numbers, and the HDHP seems to make sense — but I’m also nervous of screwing something up, since my son is about to embark on a whole new world of therapy. Does anyone have experience on this issue and have opinions generally on whether High Deductible plans are good for ABA families?

Based on the numbers I ran, I think we’d be hitting the Out of Pocket Max under either plan…and after that I assume insurance pays 100% with no more copays due (that’s how I read it). For example, we’re assuming my son will have 5 ABA sessions per week, or 260 per year. Under Cadillac Plan, the ABA copay would be $25 per session, which comes out to $6500 on the year (individual Out of Pocket Max is $6550). Under the HDHP, the ABA copay would be $50 per session (double) — but the individual Out of Pocket Max is only $4800 — so by the end of the year, despite the higher co-pay, we’d only be paying a max of $4800 for ABA therapy…at least I think that’s what it means! Does that sound right?

Thanks everyone!
