Hospital Indemnity

I hope this is close enough to health insurance to belong here. If there’s a better community to ask, please let me know.

It’s open enrollment season, and my company offers a “hospital indemnity” coverage to supplement some of the out of pocket costs. I already plan to enroll in the regular medical plan that makes the most sense for my situation (it’s an HDHP with what I think are pretty reasonable limits). Does anyone know how the hospital indemnity offerings work? I’m really struggling to get a clear answer from my HR department so far.

My wife is pregnant, expecting to deliver late January. Would her hospital stay qualify for the coverage? What about the new baby? Could baby be added to the plan as a beneficiary after they’re born, and have coverage retroactive to birth in the same way as a regular medical plan?

Thanks for any insight you can offer.
