I (20f) am making this on behalf of my sister (23f) who suffers from Crohn’s disease/Ulcerative colitis. (I am new to reddit so I apologize if this is the wrong place for this)
Backstory: My sister began having symptoms when she was 14. My parents are conservative fundamentalist Christians who don’t believe in traditional medicine so they did “natural remedies” for 4 years but she got progressively worse. They didn’t take her to a doctor because they were afraid that they would remove her from their custody and force her to take drugs. She got so bad that she weighed 60-something pounds and looked like one of those Holocaust survivors. When she was 18 she finally went to a gastroenterologist and got a prescription to manage her symptoms.
Fast forward to September of this year she had a colonoscopy but due to a complication ended up in the emergency room and admitted for 2 weeks. They told her that her condition was very severe and had gotten worse despite the medication and she needed to have her colon removed and get a colostomy bag. She refused to do it and got a second opinion and the doctor put her on steroids for now said that he was willing to try a new drug and treatment plan to try to improve her situation so she wouldn’t need that surgery.
Now our current dilemma. The drug he wants to put her on is really expensive and we can’t afford it. We don’t have health insurance. She told me that she applied for government healthcare but she only qualified for family planning doctors. My dad makes enough to pay for the drug, but he doesn’t believe in it and refuses to pay. I don’t know what to do. The only thing keeping her from deteriorating are some expired steroids she got a while back during another doctor visit.
I know she is getting depressed because of the constant pain and she has mentioned overdosing on her pills because she is tired of dealing with this. We can’t even get her a therapist to deal with this because we can’t afford that either. I am graduating college next year and am hoping to get a full time job with insurance but I need something in the meanwhile.
Is there anything I can do to get her health insurance?
