First of all – I am an idiot for not paying more attention to my credit card statements.
I moved states at the end of 2020. When I signed up in December 2020 during open enrollment, I chose to sign up in my new state.
Every other year that I’ve changed plans, it’s automatically cancelled my old one. Well apparently that’s only the case if you change plans to within the same state.
I called up healthcare.gov and the old insurance place and was like wtf? And I was told “you just signed up for a new plan in a new state, you never told us to cancel your old plan in the old state. Your fault”
Is there anything I can do? This seems completely ludicrous to me. I’m sure this is explicitly addressed somewhere in one of the giant TOS I didn’t read, but it is insane to me that signing up for a new plan in a new state through healthcare.gov does not automatically terminate your other plan in the other state.
Do I have any recourse here? Spent upwards of 20 hours on the phone about this. I even got a supervisor from the old insurance provider on the phone with a supervisor from healthcare.gov and was pretty much told I’m an idiot for assuming my plan would automatically cancel, even though that’s what it’s always done (when I didn’t move states).
Insurance company told me they would refund me partially if healthcare.gov would put in a “retroactive cancellation date”, but healthcare.gov refuses to do so – saying I never cancelled my own policy (which is true, I just signed up for a new one…. and stupidly assumed that would cancel my own one. Who needs two simultaneous insurance policies!??).
Really thought healthcare.gov would be on my side here, but I’m being treated like I’m an idiot for not being able to navigate all the intricacies of the marketplace madness.
