I’m looking to get my boyfriend health insurance this year and I have no idea where to start…
Here’s a bit about us/our situation:
He’s 27, no known health issues bc he hasn’t had a normal check up in several years due to not having health insurance.
I’m 23, and have private insurance from my dad and Medicaid bc I don’t have a paying job and we are not married. I don’t have any diagnosed health issues, but I am starting to worry about my teeth being weak/ soft.
We have 2 babies, 19 months and 7 months. Our 19 month old has a disability that enables her to have some kind of special Medicaid for life, but our 7 month old is doing just fine, also on Medicaid under me.
I know there is open enrollment some time in the winter so I’m assuming that’s when I’d sign him up for the private insurance of our choice? He is only wanting to go to the Dr for basic physicals and such, and he’s mentioned wanting to go to a chiropractor as well as a dentist for cleanings. I’d like for him to get his bones checked out because he’s a mechanic so there’s lots of smashed fingers and he has lots of broken bones from childhood that I don’t believe healed properly. For now, it will just be his insurance alone, but eventually, I’d like to get married and have our family on this plan. With that said, I’m thinking I will need a little extra time in the dentist chair as well as our 19 month old (w/ the disability). We are planning on having more children so that’s something I’m assuming we’d have to consider as well- will our plan cover going to a midwifery center and hospital birth?
I know my daughter is supposed to qualify for Medicaid for life, but there’s some places that I’d like to take her that don’t accept medicaid (pediatric aquatic therapy being one of those services) so I’d like to use our private insurance paired with a co-pay for those visits.
2 more quick questions I have –
Is vision a separate insurance like dental is?
We are planning to move states. Does that have any impact on health insurance? Will I pick one for living here in SC and then have to pick a whole new plan and company when we move (currently considering TN or PA)?
I’m young and dumb. Lay it on me. What is the process like? What do I do? What do I need to read up on? I’m completely clueless- I’ve always had nice health insurance from my parents jobs & being a college athlete covered by the university’s insurance. I’d like to continue having nice health insurance for my family and myself but I’m concerned on how much this is going to cost…
Thank you in advance!
