I feel I’m being billed wrong.

I had an appointment scheduled with my eye doctor today. It was originally scheduled to be a “follow up” to check my eye pressure, however, a month ago, I changed the appointment to a “routine eye exam” because I was due, I felt my eyes also got a little worse and wanted to update my prescription, and an eye exam covers checking pressure too.

During check in, the receptionist said your copay for this follow up appointment is $75 under Aetna. I told them no I’m doing a routine eye exam, and my copay is $15 under VSP. (I have Aetna with a copay of $50 for medical visits, with routine eye exams fully covered, and VSP with routine eye exams with 15$ copay) Wasn’t sure why they said $75 when my copay is $50, but I didn’t press on that. After some back and forth, they finally said ok yeah, it’s $15. So I paid $15 in the office. Anyways, during my appointment, my doctor did a visual acuity check to update my prescription as well as a pressure check. So it seems like they didn’t even do the whole list of things on a routine exam, but I didn’t mind since the doctor took care of my two main issues for coming in. I was happy and left.

However, about an hour after I leave the office, they called me and said that I owe an additional 75$ because I did do a “follow up”. Now I feel like they’re not being honest with me since they said I was only doing an exam (which the doctor didn’t even do fully), they told me a different copay than what’s on my Aetna benefits, and if they’re going to bill me, it should either be for a follow up or a exam, not both???

I asked them “ok, well what’s included in an exam eye vs a follow up then?” and they said “idk I’ll ask the doctor what she did today with you and get back to you by the end of the day okay?” And they did not get back to me.

What should I do here? Am I really going to have to pay the $75 along with the $15 I already paid? I feel that’s not fair.
