I am 25 years old and I have Anthem Blue across Blue Shield through my employer at a Fortune 500 company.
In July, I accidentally sliced off a sizeable chunk of my left index finger with a fruit peeler. After 6 hours, the bleeding not stopping, and the immense pain, I called the emergency center around the corner from my apartment. I asked them if they were in my network. They said yes. So, I went over and I was in and out in 15 minutes. They poured some kind of powder on my finger and sent me on my way. I asked the receptionist how much it was cost, and she said your insurance has covered it. So I leave thinking oh wow what a great deal. Right? WRONG.
A few months later I get an EOB stating that the emergency center was NOT in my network (even though they said that they were) and that I owe them $2270.47 because of the out of network costs. I obviously appealed it, and as of now I have absolutely no idea what the status of the appeal is.
However, today, I got a call from the Emergency center, and they told me that I owe THEM another ~$700!!! So now on top of what I owe anthem, I owe almost $3000 fucking dollars for a fucking cut on my finger!!! I told the lady on the phone the whole situation and that they are absolutely scamming me for the care I received and that they wouldn’t be getting a cent out of me. She said they would be transmitting the bill to collections.
So what happens to me now? If I don’t pay this, will it affect my credit? How can I get off the hook? What is the point of even having health insurance if a simple cut on my left index finger will cost me THREE THOUSAND FUCKING DOLLARS!!! I mean I’m more fortunate than others and do have the ability to pay but I’m just not fucking going to. This shouldn’t cost that much fucking money.
