I am so new to figuring out insurance as I’ve had the same plan for many years, but am losing it due to a slowdown at work and lack of hours from earlier this year. Fortunately I am working steadily again at the same job.
I learned about possibly getting unsubsidized insurance from my state’s marketplace, but I’m not sure how that works exactly. My income along with my spouse is “too high” and we got denied. I have looked into the income amount and that would be correct we don’t qualify.
Cobra is looking like $1,600 a month. I just want to make the right decision and it seems like I’ve only got a few more days to sign up on the marketplace if there’s any other options there. (Just want to reiterate, I signed up on my states marketplace but got denied due to being outside the income range.) Are there any other options to get on a cheaper plan than cobra? And is unsubsidized insurance through the marketplace an option?
Also, I am reading that for cobra I could wait nearly 60 days to sign up? I’m considering that although I’m a bit worried to mess with it. Any reason why cobra wouldn’t cover both my wife and I? She is self employed and on my insurance and has been for many years.
Very confused and hoping to make the right decision, thank you for insight.
