If you are approved for Medicaid, do you still need to select a plan?

This question is for New York State specifically. My girlfriend aged out of her parents’ insurance plan so she applied for medicaid through the state marketplace as she only works part-time so meets the income requirement. She was approved and received a benefits card. Is that all that needs to happen or do you still need to apply for a specific plan through an insurance company in order to cover medication, doctor appts, etc?

I ask because I also have medicaid, but I receive it through the essential plan from United Healthcare. I applied a few years ago so I literally don’t recall how the process went or what the difference is between our two set ups.

Any insight is appreciated, thanks!
