If your medical bills are still pending, are you still covered if you leave your job since you’ve already received the treatment?

Hi there! I’m in a bit of a tough spot and I could use some help. Not sure this question will make sense without context so here we go.

I was diagnosed with a rare and potentially life-threatening form of non-melanoma skin cancer that ended up requiring major surgery and 6 weeks of radiation. I am only 28 so this diagnosis (stage 3 verging on 4) has been a shock to say the least. But I’m happy to say the radiation ends on Wednesday which is the last piece of treatment that should ensure the tumor doesn’t come back or spread anymore.

So the tough part is I accepted an offer to attend grad school before I knew I’d need this treatment. I am planning on quitting the job that supplies my health insurance once radiation ends and taking a month off to rest before I start school (it has been a long year!) I will have finished my treatments by the time I quit, and will also get new insurance through my school when I start in July, but I don’t actually know how good it is compared to my current work insurance.

All of these expensive treatments received prior authorization, but Cigna is taking forever to tell me how much I am actually going to owe. My pre-insurance totals are starting to show up in my patient portal and are already totaling over $100k but again insurance SHOULD cover it if my cancer center is giving me correct info.

At this point I’m getting pretty twitchy and paranoid so here’s my main question:

If all of these bills hit after I quit the job that provides the insurance I’m using to cover at least 90% of it, do I lose that coverage and have to pay a larger amount? Or am I ok because the treatments all took place before I quit my job when I still had good insurance?

Any knowledge/advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
