Illinois – Both my wife’s and my insurance refusing to pay for delivery of our first child

Our first child was born in November, 2019. Prior to that, my wife and I, both fully employed, had separate insurance plans through our work. We had decided that it made the most sense in terms of monthly payments to add our son to my plan. From what I remember, you have thirty days after the birth to add them, which we did.

A couple months after the birth we got the bill for the delivery. The hospital coded it in our son’s name. My insurance is refusing to cover it because when we entered the hospital, our son didn’t exist yet. Her insurance is refusing to cover it because our son is the one being billed as the patient, and he isn’t covered by her insurance. Both insurance companies repeatedly direct us to the other one, and the bill has gone to collections.

We’ve spoken to both companies probably a dozen times at this point without any success. Any help would be very much appreciated.
