I’m dumb to the insurance world…what are my options?

My first job was a union job. I guess I had top tier insurance, I never had to worry where I went and I never had to pay a penny aside from maybe $5 on a prescription, so I was spoiled. The past 6 years away from that job have been a wake up call and I really am not sure where to turn.

For the longest time now due to conversations I’d had with others I thought you could have an HSA without regular health insurance, that it was just an alternative, and figured when I got unhappy enough I’d move on to that option. Today we had a meeting about switching insurance at work and, I’m not loving it. I looked into maybe opening my own HSA instead and putting the money I put into my insurance at work into that with whatever extra I’d need to buy prescription coverage – but it appears that’s not the case, I’d still need to pay for insurance.

Even an HSA isn’t ideal as I’d have to wait for certain procedures until I could afford them, but it would afford me assurance that I’m covered, and I could go where I want.

I’ve hated my insurance. I’ve been so limited and I never meet my 2k deductible. I don’t get things checked that I should because my options are so limited and everything’s a nightmare. I’ve been on payment plans with hospitals and nonsense. The only good thing I have to say is that my prescriptions have all been covered, when they actually accept them and don’t run me around for 6 months without medication. Right now I’m on one migraine medication that’s 1500/mo and another that I’m sure is several hundred, so I need that.

We’re moving to capital blue in December which is nice, I’ll have more options of where to go. But the deductible will now be 3k. Considering my MRI last year rocked me 2k at the end of the year…then couldn’t use the benefit from paying that. – and I want x-rays of my wrists coming up as I’m always in severe pain and they’re constantly getting injured, I’d be hit with the full cost of those x-rays unless I met my deductible. And I just can’t do that…I don’t have the ability. So I’d end up just not doing anything about it like I always do. I also don’t get it. If we’re, me and my employer, paying over 340/mo, where the hell does that go? I hate it. I really do. I’d need to additionally buy dental and vision, and of course any other. I haven’t bought them any other year.

Is there any other option? Anything at all? I’m happy to save for medical expenses. I’m happy to pay for medical expenses. But throwing money into a policy then still having to pay so much out of pocket all the time, never meeting the actual benefit point, getting denied so much…it’s just a nightmare and I hate it. 🤷‍♀️
