Insurance coverage for new born

My friend was told that a new born child is covered under the mother’s plan for first 31 days after birth. The lady in question hit her out of pocket maximum with her C Section delivery, but somehow the insurance added the newborn child as a dependent on the insurance and billed all the care received by the child for 2 days stay in the hospital to the child’s own plan. As the child’s plan didn’t hit the out of pocket maximum the hospital is asking them to pay around $3000. How can they fight this? The lady explicitly told the hospital staff that she doesn’t want the child to be added to her plan as the child is covered under her plan for first 31 days. TIA
