Insurance covers doctors but not “facilities” so I cant get regular care without huge bills…is this normal??

I’m in my 20s and still on a parent’s insurance. I dont think I can afford to buy my own plan, but my parent’s insurance is making things very difficult. Wondering if what I’m experiencing is normal or if other plans could help avoid these issues:

My insurance lists many doctors of all specialties as in-network and covered. However they have a sneaky caveat about facilities. They will only cover care in what they consider a “clinic” (they have a list of what counts and it’s mostly just private practices) and not what they consider an “outpatient or freestanding facility,” even for a doctor they list online as in-network. My parent lives in a suburb where most care is available in what’s considered a clinic. I live in a major city and dont have a car. I have only been able to find “facilities” near me, so I have been charged insane bills whenever I need to go to a doctor. Especially now that I am looking for specialists, it is impossible for me to find anything that my insurance considers a “clinic” that I could realistically go to.

Is it normal for insurance to be so picky about location types like this? What do people do if you dont have private practice options in your area? Or do I just have a terrible plan? Should I start looking into getting my own insurance?

Any insight is greatly appreciated. I’ve been struggling with this for years and have delayed getting care because of it.
