Insurance denied my claim for a COVID test that I took in December because the lab was out of network. I thought all COVID tests were supposed to be free, regardless of whether you have insurance? I’m also confused as to who I supposedly owe money to.

I was exposed to COVID and required by my employer to get tested before returning to work. I got tested in December and thought that was that. But a few days ago, my insurance said my claim was denied. If I look at the details of the claim denial it says “This is not a bill. Your health care professional may bill you directly for any amount that you owe”. But there’s an option on the insurance company’s website to pay the $300 owe for lab work. I haven’t been contacted at all by the testing company about a bill. Also the testing company itself says on their website that the test is free, even for the uninsured.

What should I do?
