Insurance processed ER visit but hospital is denying insurance

Went to out of state ER in Montana for a fractured humerus 4 months ago where they took x-rays, put me in a cast, and referred me to a local orthopedic to see options for surgery. Knowing my out of state options were limited with my insurance (Ambetter from Washington), I cancelled that appointment and received care in another orthopedic center in Washington. Last month I received a ~$2000 bill from the hospital in Montana. Talked to my insurance and they said they processed the claim and I should only owe ~$900. Brought this up to the hospital in Montana and they sent my account to review for 4-5 days and replied that I owe the full $2000 because the insurance company was not contracted with the hospital. I’m confused why the hospital would reject my insurance if the insurance agreed to cover a portion of the bill already and if there was anything I could do
