Leaving my job and am unsure of my health insurance options going forward

Hi all, I will be quitting my current job ($98k) at the end of this month and, like the title says, am unsure of what my options are for the new year.

I am 39, my wife is 40 and we have one kid (4 years old). I am the only earner and I won’t be working from at least January – April. We have about 5 months of savings for this period of unemployment but the one cost I haven’t been able to nail down is health care.

I live in Illinois (60193) and I’m currently on a high-deductible PPO plan through BlueCross with my employer and it will cost me about $1,600 a month if I want to continue this coverage (I believe I will have that option for 6 months through COBRA). That’s pretty steep but the only other option I’ve considered has been Medicaid.

I’ve tried calling to see if I would qualify after I quit and if there’s any deadlines to enroll but the people I’ve talked to weren’t that helpful. I’m assuming I should be able to get it since we will have $0 income for at least the 4 months but wasn’t able to get any assurances and even though I thought I read there was a deadline on December 15 the person I spoke to said there isn’t a deadline and I can enroll at any time.

Any suggestions/advice in would be greatly appreciated. Please also let me know if any other information is required and I will be happy to provide it.

Thanks in advance!
