Left job – Missed COBRA deadline without realizing – had surgery – Am I screwed?

I left my job on September 3, and my insurance plan lasted up until September 30. I had until November 2 to send in my paperwork to enroll in COBRA, but I completely forgot about it until now (November 9). My house flooded and I had a severe back injury–4 herniated discs. Between all that chaos I lost track of the deadline.
I had surgery on October 26th, and i am still in recovery but I remembered i needed to send in my paperwork. Imagine my dismay when I got back home and started going through the COBRA paperwork and realized i had missed the deadline by a week.

I hurriedly applied for a new health insurance plan, but it doesn’t start until December 1.
Is there any chance my insurance would somehow cover the surgery retroactively, or am i just going to have to pay the entire thing out of pocket? I cannot afford that and it will likely financially ruin me for years.

I’m begging for someone to offer me some advice here because I am freaking out.

tl;dr: Unintentionally had surgery without health insurance, is there anything I can do?
