I did the math and more than 20% of my GROSS income is going to medical expenses:
$16,000/year for ACA plan premiums
$10,000/year for OoP dental/vision expenses
$2,400/year for prescriptions
$5,000/year for misc routine copays
$1,000/year for out-of-network labwork
Thankfully, my kid was treated at St Jude (leukemia) and is considered cured. Long-term side effects that result from chemo SHOULD be handled by SJ but it’s not always clear as to the cause of the condition (e.g. ADHD/anxiety run through every branch on both sides of the family trees, so SJ will perform testing to establish a diagnosis and continue to track for research purposes over the years, but I have to find therapists and prescribing docs in the community to treat said conditions.)
I’m at the point to where the ‘junk plans’ are starting to look more and more appealing but I’m terrified to let go of the ACA protection because I’m terrified of what happens if/when my kid needs them. I have no reason to think they will suddenly develop complications but I am aware that the cancer could be used to deny just about any claim due to the sheer breadth of their systems that could be affected (heart, lungs, nervous system, etc).
I need to know if my concerns about that are valid or not. At this point I’m basically paying $1,350/month to receive minor discounts on routine medical care and we are relying heavily on GoodRX for prescription discounts because the prices are better than what insurance offers.
Any info and resources y’all could provide would be welcome.
