My 96-year-old grandmother just got approved for Medi-Cal and I was very excited until I saw her Share of Cost. She has income of $1800 and a SoC of $1200. Her rent/bills/food are about $1600 a month, and she and I have been paying for her caregiver ourselves and going totally broke. Even at just $15 an hour it’s usually around $1500 a month and she doesn’t even have nearly the hours she could use.
I applied for IHSS, but I guess they’ll expect her to pay $1200 herself before they pay for any care? I see the standard ‘maintenance’ deduction is $600, but what do they expect people to do about their bills and rent?
