Medi-Cal or employer United Healthcare?

I’m located in San Diego, CA. I had Medi-Cal from LA, but haven’t used it since I had insurance through my university. Now that I’ve graduated, I technically don’t have health insurance. I’m able to call and ask for a transfer of my Medi-Cal to my current county.

However, I recently enrolled in my job’s insurance plan, which covers health, vision, and dental, and takes effect Jan 01, 2021. It’s United Healthcare, which I haven’t heard great things about. It’s the basic plan available.

I would be using health insurance to cover a few prescription meds, which under United would be a $20 copay. I’m not sure how much it would be under Medi-Cal, but I think it’s free.

Is it worth it to try to call to get my Medi-Cal transferred? Or is the United plan an upgrade? How bad is United, and what can I expect?
