(Most of this is a rant, please skip to the bottom for an actual question if you don’t want to read.)
Hello, I’m a college student and I have medicaid. MCNA dental is my insurance in Florida. I’ve been working out of state for a few months less than a year and then I plan to go back to Florida. I moved here for work during the pandemic and after spending hours on the phone for weeks as both a full time worker and student, I was told to startover again in switching my insurance from florida to this state. I decided to just hold off til I went back to florida so i wouldnt have to go through that two more times.
Anyway, a bit before I moved here, I’ve had terrible wisdom teeth pain on and off for a year so I finally got a dentist referall to get my wisdom teeth out. I call the place the referred me to, and after weeks of getting a dial tone because they’re closed 3/5 days out the week and no one told me, I was finally able to get through and no appointment available for 4 months. My life was hectic during the pandemic and I wasn’t able to attend that 4 month out appointment and ended up going out of state.
It’s now a year after getting that referal and my wisdom teeth are now infected, there’s a hole in my gum and everywhere I google my symptoms tells me I’m going to die of an infection. After 3 days of not being able to sleep, cleaning my teeth 4x a day, and being told by my insurance to wait and wait, I was able to get help through an app! Where they prescribed my antibiotics.
I now have a dentist appointment which I made for the antibiotics but after spending hours on the phone with different places today found I’ll just have to go to get another check up and referral. This is because everywhere I call, even though I tell them it’s an emergency, say that I need this referral, and then even with the referral “Sorry out next availability isn’t for 2 months.” I got lucky with one place who said they have a consult open for next week but they can’t make a second appointment for the removal until after the consult, so whether or not I have to miss work and pay thousands of dollars for airfare and lodging when I go to Florida is just up in the air. Then they call me back an hour later and say they don’t accept my insurance for my age. I told them I’d pay them out of pocket and they say “Sorry we already cancelled your appointment. The next one is in mid-September.”
And after that I just cried.
I type all this out to express my frustration because I’m in pain, I haven’t been sleeping because of anxiety, I have the stress of finals week in school, and absolutely no one can help me. I know it’s partially my fault because I should’ve sucked it up and switched my insurance to my state but anyone who knows, knows that spending your days off calling 3-5 different phone numbers with hours of long holds and transfers all to be hung up on or told they can’t help or to wait, it’s maddening. I just find it insane that I’m willing to even pay out of pocket, which I really can’t afford, and even then I can’t get help. I can’t imagine people with immediate emergencies having to go through this. The American Healthcare System in America is deadly.
———————————————————————————————————-
I guess other than that I’m hoping someone can recommend a better insurance plan for Medicaid in Broward-Dade Florida that has a better Dental Plan. There were only 4 Oral Surgeons for MCNA for miles and none of them can help me for a minimum of 2 months, and that was if I scheduled today. More options at least would be nice. I’ll be trying to pay to get one of my teeth removed in the near future but I’m asking for the rest.
I had a different medicaid plan before Staywell/Wellcare/MCNA and they had a ton of options for everything, covered everything, and had immediate appointments. It stopped being offered with Medicaid and they switched me to Staywell/Wellcare/MCNA and it’s been hell trying to find a provider for everything else I need help with. So if anyone has medicaid in south florida and are happy with their plan, I’d like to know which one you have.
