Medical Procedure Gone Wrong – Do We Have to Pay?

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I have questions regarding a medical bill my girlfriend received, and what can be done about it.

My girlfriend recently went in to get an IUD because other forms of birth control weren’t working out for her. She went through the procedure and a couple days later started to notice that it might not have been put in properly. It started out as discomfort but got worse and worse each day. By time she went in the second time she knew something was obviously wrong, and had asked for them to just straight up remove it.

The nurse said they would need proof that the IUD was placed incorrectly in order to remove it (so that it would be covered by insurance) and had scheduled her for an ultrasound (which they said was covered by her insurance). Welp, turns out the ultrasound wasn’t covered and it ended up costing more than just getting the IUD removed without insurance in the first place.

Anyways, after getting her ultrasound, she had to wait the entire weekend to get in with her primary care doctor to get UID removed. She finally gets it removed and then they sent a bill for around $1000.

Does she have to pay this? They messed up and didn’t put the IUD in properly, lied about coverage to get her to pay more for an unnecessary ultrasound, then are expecting her to pay for it? Not quite sure what she is paying for since they fucked up and caused her to go through misery, that she wouldn’t have had to go through if she just didn’t get any of this done in the first place.

Is there anything that protects her from having to pay for procedures that were not done correctly? Does she have to pay for corrective procedures to fix what was caused by the medical center?

Not sure if this is specific enough, but I can ask her for more details if required. Thank you all for reading and I appreciate any help you can give regarding this matter.
