So me (27F) and my boyfriend (33M) are planning on moving across the country in July and we will be changing jobs. We currently live in California and will be most likely moving to New Hampshire. (I say most likely since we are still looking for a house/jobs and my parents live in NH so if all else is lost, we will be living with my parents temporarily. Ideally we want to stay in NH but that’s not set in stone)
I work in education as a paraeducator. My boyfriend works at a local hospital. We both have health insurance through our own workplaces.
Neither of us have ever gone without health insurance so we don’t know how this hap insurance works.
We are looking at a month gap max and maybe as little as 2 weeks. Again.. everything is uncertain as we are currently looking for jobs and don’t have a set move date yet.
Neither of us have pre-existing conditions but we do have regular prescriptions (we could order ahead of time). We obviously really want health insurance for legal reasons and also… driving across the country is a situation I’d definitely want to have insurance.
My work said my benefits would end June 30, but I will be working summer school which ends July 9 so I’m assuming it would expire after summer school. My boyfriend has not asked his work yet about when his benefits end.
We are just wondering what are our options. Cobra seems it would be really expensive? And also how and when do we apply? And then when we get a new job does that qualify as an event for enrollment in our new job’s insurance? Is there anything else we should know?
