Moving from Japan to California. Get insurance during open enrollment or special enrollment?

Hello! I will be moving from Japan to California in April 2021 with a green card.

My age is late 20s. Pretty healthy and minimal need for medical care, so mostly just to protect against emergency event charges.

However, I am confused if I should enroll for individual health insurance through Covered California during open enrollment now OR during my special enrollment period (which I think will be open 60 days after the move).

Concerns either way:

1) Open enrollment: I will not be able to really “use” it for January to April, so it feels like I am spending some money on the monthly premium unnecessarily.

2) Special enrollment: It seems like I can apply within 60 days of my move into California. That implies there will be a period I will be totally uninsured. I hate to say it but the reality is if I get very sick or have a bad accident, it could financially be very bad.

Do I have an accurate assessment here? Would appreciate any thoughts, advice, or prior experience.
