My mom passed away from cancer in July 2021 and we are just now getting medical bills from early 2021 and even a few from fall of 2020

From what I can tell (please correct me if I am wrong), it isn’t entirely out of the ordinary to get medical bills so long after the date of service. However, I am curious if there is anything that can be done to expedite the process at all?

We have reached out to my mom’s insurance (Blue Cross Blue Shield) and the provider where she was getting her treatment, and both are blaming each other for the delay. So that hasn’t been too helpful.

None of these bills are insane—$400 is the largest so far, most are below $100—but my dad and I are nervous that this is just the tip of the ice berg we are seeing, given that we have yet to see a bill later than 6 months before she passed. And, while not ideal, the cost isn’t the real issue here. It’s mostly just been hard to get closure with these little reminders of her illness trickling in at their leisure.

So is there anything that can be done on our end to get all of her remaining medical bills now? Or are we just forced to wait?

PS: We live in Colorado if that is helpful information to have..
