I enrolled my whole family of four (me, wife, 2 kids) in marketplace coverage in 2021 based on my annual income, it was too high for Medicaid so we all qualified for marketplace plans.
For 2022, because of my recent income situation, the two kids will qualify for Medicaid, and my wife and I will be on a marketplace plan. I just got the Medicaid approval letter for my two kids. But for Medicaid, apparently they look at monthly income and not annual, and so because of my recent drop in income, they approved my two kids for Medicaid going back to September 2021.
What do I do about the two kids’ marketplace coverage for 2021? I called Healthcare.gov customer service today to try and see if I need to cancel the marketplace coverage for my two kids for 2021, and/or how it will work with any claims from the period of September 1-now. But the person I talked to was completely out of her depth and did not know what to tell me other than “wait and see what happens”.
I don’t want to wait and see what happens because I don’t want to owe hundreds of dollars to Blue Cross.
I wish they had not been approved for Medicaid in 2021, but I guess this is due to a conflict between how the marketplace tax incentives work (annual income), and how the NC Medicaid eligibility works (monthly income).
