I’ve been given a job offer that looks very promising, and I would very much like to leave my current job for it. However, I was looking over their benefits package and noticed that instead of offering traditional insurance coverage, they offer a combination of a “co-pay insurance” and health share. From what I understand, this means I would pay a flat co-pay on certain medical fees without any sort of deductible or pre-negotiated price for specific services/tests, and then the health share augments this by requiring I pay up to a grand before services for one particular issue are covered (though they are then covered in full.) This excludes pre-existing conditions.
I’m concerned about this. I have stomach issues that have been ongoing and I am in and out of the doctor’s office a few times a year to get bloodwork done and get new medication. There’s also just the paranoia of needing diagnostic work done and having to pay a small fortune before I actually am eligible for some help. Conversely, the cost per month is very low, a fraction of what I pay now for full health coverage…
Am I understanding this all right? Does this seem a bit too risky, and are there other options out there to meet my needs? I’ve been stressed out because I need to sign this contract soon, and I do really like everything else about the job, but this is kind of a dealbreaker and I want to be sure I’m understanding it correctly.
