New Job Health Benefits start mid Jan, Can I still get keep my enrollment for 2021 if I decided to “cancel” the rest of 2020

  • I’ve always had insurance
  • Became a contractor, switched to ACA. Paid premiums (Platinum/Gold PPO plan) of > $400 since 2014 (don’t qualify for credits). Current rate is $650.
  • New job mid Oct, pay increase was huge so I glossed over the health insurance cos I figured it would be cheaper than ACA. Found out after I started that New job benefits start mid Jan 2021. I never officially cancelled current and am still within the 60 day grace period ending today.

I don’t pay for my remaining 2020(Nov&Dec) premiums, I know the company will “cancel” me but its already 12/31 so that’s not an issue. I haven’t been to the doctor except my physical in Jan.

  1. Will that prevent me from enrolling in 2021? I am automatically enrolled, already got the bill for 2021. I just want that option if I need to.
  2. Do I still owe for the 2020 months aka will this be reported as a collection debt? Again, just my physical in Jan so do I owe them?
