New Job, New Baby, Not-So-Great Choices…Help?

I’ve recently started a new job and need to pick a new healthcare plan TODAY (I’ve been putting off the decision, since none of the plans are as attractive as any plan I’ve had in the past…joys of startup life). I have always had PPO insurance, but my new job offers two HMOs and a single PPO, and the PPO is significantly more expensive.

To complicate matters, my husband recently lost his job, so our infant son (9 months old, has always been on my husband’s plan) will need to be on my plan until my husband gets back to work. It’s possible that my husband will need to join me on my plan as well, although he’s fairly healthy and may choose to just enroll in COBRA if he needs it prior to getting a new job. Also, we have started talking about the possibility of trying for a second child, so that will inform my decision as well.

I know that base level an HMO offers lower premiums, but there’s much more flexibility with a PPO. However, I’m really at a loss as to what might be better for me in this specific situation. Does anyone have any suggestions as to which plan to choose?

All are through BCBS. I have no PCP in my area. Aside from one medication I take regularly for ADD, neither my son nor I have any ongoing health concerns, nor do we visit any doctors regularly. Numbers below are for me + my son…deduction goes up significantly when we add my husband to any of the plans.

PPO
Bi-weekly Deduction: $437
Deductible: $12,000
OOP Max: $16,300
Coinsurance: 90%

HMO #1
Bi-weekly Deduction: $256
Deductible: $15,800
OOP Max: $15,800
Coinsurance: 100%

HMO #2
Bi-weekly Deduction: $303
Deductible: $9,000
OOP Max: $9,000
Coinsurance: 100%
