No idea how to be a proper adult. I think I’m accidentally double covered through same insurer (Cigna; independently + through employer) – what should I do?

Hi all,

I’ll try my very best to explain clearly. I’m well past the age where I should understand all this stuff, but I feel I have no guidance. I’m lost.

Alright, Feb 2019 – I am offered full-time position at my job. Benefits/insurance come up for the first time in my life. I have NO CLUE how any of this stuff works. I do not understand that I have a limited amount of time to enroll, so I miss out on benefits from my employer. I hold onto the insurance plan I had gotten through Marketplace the previous year after aging out of my parents’ coverage.

Open enrollment of that year comes…I again miss out because no one told me when open enrollment was, and being one of the only employees who did not start out at full time, no one else thinks to worry about it but me. D’oh. Another year of insurance through Healthcare Marketplace.

Finally! October 2020. I successfully sign up for benefits through my employer. All should be well. Until…I learn that I was automatically enrolled in my previous year’s plan with Cigna. I thought I had canceled it by going to Healthcare.gov but that does not seem to be the case after all.

This part especially annoys me — I’m pretty sure I have memories of stressfully making sure I was all taken care of through Marketplace insurance. Since when did it become so easy to auto-enroll? Anyway…

My independent plan and my employer’s health plan are both through Cigna.
So, to check my employment benefits I need to use myCigna.
To register with myCigna, I only have one SSN to do so. My SSN is already tied to an account with my old plan.

I’m scared I’m going to lose all my coverage if I even try to contact them.

Any idea where to start? Should I just contact them and hope it can be sorted out? They make it so hard to unenroll in coverage already, but will they cut me some slack since I’m not trying to do business elsewhere? I’m literally trying to cancel and be their customer at the same time.

tl;dr: I didn’t cancel my old insurance properly before enrolling in my employer’s insurance plan using the same company. Now I’m worried if I cancel the old one the new one will disappear too. I just want my tax info to be normal for once…

No answer is too obvious. I’m feeling mega stupid already, just looking for any type of advice.

Thanks!
