26F, Delaware, $25,000/annually (pre-tax)
Hi everyone!
I turned 26 on October 31st and lost my insurance coverage through my parents. I’m really conflicted on whether I should get insurance or not.
My job offers decent insurance but it is $600 a month and I only bring home $1500 a month so that’s not an option. The cheapest marketplace option I qualify for is $150 a month. My finances are already really stretched and the $150 alone would really HURT but it’s doable. That insurance has a high deductible however, and doesn’t cover anything until it is met, so I would never use it except in case of a catastrophe. I’m a really anxious and cautious person so I’m inclined to buy that insurance just in case but my issue comes with my current conditions.
I currently see a therapist weekly and I have very severe PCOS that I take several medications and supplements for. I also have asthma and migraines with a history of mini-stroke but those aren’t as much of a concern/don’t require expensive daily meds. The therapy and all of my medications are obviously not covered so I’m having to also spend a lot more to keep myself healthy, which causes further financial strain.
I’m so scared to go without health insurance, especially in a pandemic when I have an underlying condition, but I’m also scared to not be able to buy my medications and keep myself healthy.
Can someone please offer additional perspective, please?
