[NYS] Losing student health coverage on April 15th. Will have student health coverage available again on August 16th. What do I do for these 4 months and what are the logistics for making sure I enroll efficiently?

I’m not returning to school this term because of covid. My school is doing a hybrid on-campus/online thing. Last term, I did online only and the experience was very subpar. This term, I have classes that can only be taken on-campus. I’m high risk (asthma). Having to live on campus and go to class is not worth potentially dying over.

Since I’m not returning, I’m losing my student health insurance coverage. My existing health insurance is United Healthcare Student Resources. It uses the nationwide Choice Plus network. Normally, spring semester would give me coverage through August 15th. After talking to my school and UnitedHealthcare, they said the only option was to extend the plan for 3 months, which I did. It will now expire on April 15th.

I’m anticipating going back to school in the Fall – hopefully I’ll be vaccinated by then and covid will be over. The health insurance coverage for the Fall semester will start August 16th.

So, basically, I need health insurance coverage between April 16th – August 15th.

New York State. No parents.

I don’t have any urgent medical conditions and I have enough medication to last me until August. But, I do get afraid of something unpredictable happening. Also, I have a summer internship coming up between late May to early August. Right now, it’s scheduled to be remote. Though, the company said they may move their internship program to on-site if Covid is under control by the summer. If this happens, I’ll be expected to temporarily relocate to Seattle for the ~3 month internship. Since it’s an internship, they’re not giving me health insurance. (I don’t think any employer offers health insurance to interns).

I’m a bit worried though. I tend to get sick/injured when I travel, so I want to make sure I’m covered just in case unforeseen things happen. It also seems a bit absurd to be paying so much for a New York marketplace plan when I won’t even be able to actually use it since I’ll be located out-of-state during my internship.

As far as I’m concerned, New York banned all non-marketplace individual plans including short-term insurance, which is unfortunate since New York marketplace plans only cover providers located in New York State. I know they cover out-of-network “emergency care,” but from what I’ve read, it only covers the actual emergency room. It seems I’d be on the hook for 100% if I had a catastrophic emergency that required me to be admitted or if I just need to go to a few doctors appointments during the 3 months I’m out there.

Is there travel insurance available that would cover medical expenses? Or are those banned in New York too?

If I did end up getting a NY marketplace plan, when do I enroll? From what I’ve seen, they start on the 1st of the month while my student health plan starts/ends in the middle of the month. When do I enroll and for which start date? Will I be able to cancel the plan so I can jump back onto my student plan in August? How do I do that?
