Only Family Out Of Pocket Max

I have a cousin who has continue to get billed after he hit what he thought was his personal out of pocket max. He called in and his insurance company told him they only have a family out of pocket max, not individual maximums. It says on his dashboard that he has a $3,000 individual max, and they told him that isn’t accurate because he has a family plan.

I’m pretty sure either he or the insurance rep was confused, but is it possible to not have individual OOPM on a family plan? This is assuming that the employer sponsored plan is compliant.

Any insight is appreciated. Also I’m new to the sub so sorry for any mistakes with the post.
