Open Enrollment Help

Is an HDHP with an HSA worth it if it includes a higher premium than our DHMO plan? Both are with Kaiser Permanente. I am a single 34 year old school teacher. We have two options for health insurance via Kaiser: HDHP w/HSA (6k deductible, 6K MOOP) and DHMO 2500 (2500 deductible, 4500 MOOP).

34 YO, Denver CO (80206), Income 65-70K/year

There are some features of an HSA I like: it rolls over, retirement advantages etc. I added up all my medical expenses for last year: vision (eyeglasses/contacts), dental, dermatologist, regular check-ups, out of pocket PT etc. and it came to essentially $2,000. I see the dermatologist and physical therapist more than my regular doctor: avid runner with very sensitive, acne prone skin since childhood. I see an out of network PT as the Kaiser one I saw suggested I stop running….I also wear glasses/contacts.

Also, my employer contributes $3000/year ($250/month) into our HSA.

However, the HSA plan actually has a higher premium than the DHMO by nearly $50.

HDHP: $81.60/month

DHMO: $32.61/month

Our district supplements the premiums some. I also have access to an FSA with the DHMO plan.

Is the HDHP w/HSA still worth it?
