I just switched jobs and my health insurance at the new job will not kick in until Jan 1st. I was told by some family that I needed to be sure to opt in for the Cobra coverage asap, so I did. But I’m now realizing that I could have waited the 60 days (would get me to about 15 days before new insurance would start) and then opt’ed in.
I’m noticing that the Grace Date to pay the monthly premium is until Dec 14th. Is there any risk to me not paying until then – or until a medical emergency more expensive than the premium happens? Would they report to the credit bureau that I didn’t pay or anything?
I feel like for the cost of the monthly premium through Cobra, it’s worth just not having insurance for that 2-3 week period between 12/14 and 01/01.
Let me know if i’m being foolish.
