Hi all! I’m in my early 20s and trying to help my mom find affordable health insurance in Virginia. She’s been uninsured since she left her full-time role 3 years ago and started helping my dad with his business. My dad has Medicare as he’s in his 60s, but mom doesn’t qualify yet. My dad has 2 small businesses (one of which closed due to COVID) and he’s not able to provide employee health insurance.
For the past 3 years, my parents have been filing their taxes jointly under the LLC which has made both my parents’ income appear as part of the overall business earnings. This has meant neither of them has been eligible for any of the stimulus checks, or any annual tax returns (despite their personal income not actually being that high)
This is the first year they decided to file separately to insure my mom’s income is rendered accurately as an employee and not lumped in with the LLC.
When my mom tried to find an individual plan for herself last year prices were exorbitant (between $800-$900/month for okay coverage).
Today, we tried again via marketplace and the prices were a bit lower (in the $700/month range for bronze plans) but still insanely expensive given that my mom’s monthly wage now comes out to be ~$2000.
Are we doing wrong? Should the answer to the “household income” question not include my parent’s joint income (which they’re writing off as being~$4,400/month as a result of COVID)? Are there alternatives that I’m missing?
